I've got what? Viral Gastroenteritis!
Last week my husband and I headed to the upper East Bay as we always do on Thursday's to pick up his daughter from school. We stopped off at a local eatery in Walnut Creek for a bite and then continued on to collect her from school around 2pm.
By 9pm that evening my husband had gut wrenching stomach cramps. We chalked it up to maybe food poisoning from the restaurant hence I was not sick. We ate practically the same items. By morning he could not keep anything in or down his throat. It was a horrific day of bathroom visits, sweats and chills. Since I was still not sick I figured maybe his sensitive stomach had a reaction to our prior day's lunch or maybe he caught a 24 hour flu.
The symptoms persisted calming around Saturday where we thought he was feeling better so he decided to have a bit of dinner. Bad choice as it started all over again and we were in the Doctor's office by Monday morning thinking she was going to give him some antibiotics and call it a day.
NOPE. There is somewhat a new in age viral in town and there is no pill for it except to wait it out! Yes after blood and stool tests, we learned that he had what is called a 'viral gastroenteritis'. Which I am not sure why it could be considered a stomach flu as this can lasts days, even weeks.
So we were told that you must step back and tread lightly as your system needs to clear itself of it. Fluids but not heavy fluids. Everything in the light sense. And the BRAT diet is recommended. Which stands for 'Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast'. Well there is a method to the madness as apparently this viral bug does not like meat, dairy or all those things you are supposed to eat that provide fiber.
Needless to say these are not the four food group daily dietary groups of a meal but one needs to start off slow to calm the stomach. Almost train it back into health and it will take some time. That is the scary part about new illness's as we are so used to going to the doctor and coming out with some sort of antibiotic at times like this. Well folks if this is the new day and age of bug's and viruses, one better get in check.
If you have someone in the family with this bug, it is contagious if come in contact with any of the 'ick' from the aftermath, and even saliva is what I was told by one of the nurses. Frankly I had not kissed my husband nor used the same bathroom at he did after knowing and I STILL GOT a dose of this also.
Make sure to clean and disinfect after each time you get sick. If nothing else just Clorox wipe the areas of the toilet seat and counters down. Mop the floors around the base of the toilet.
So far we are surviving this lovely bug by eating literally nothing but keeping hydrated. Funny thing is one of the Doctor's said without a beat, "Oh you can go a week without eating. Protein shakes are good but made with ice. "
Today we had plain bagels and ginseng tea. All seems to be sane and this is not the way wanted to lose weight fast but if you have this bug, take it seriously to get your flora back in check. Bring those Lysol wipes with you in your purse or jacket as there is so much going around right now that is viral, you might want to wipe down anything in a public place before you sit to eat or other things.
